The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina and the Nursing Department co-organise the post-graduate programme of studies on “Adult Nursing” with the aim of providing graduates with a solid knowledge foundation on the latest developments in healthcare services and the practical application of innovative care mechanisms to people in need as well as to caregivers and their families. This programme offers students the opportunity to develop their previously acquired nursing knowledge and advance their scientific nursing thinking with regards to the provision of innovative solutions and the management of complicated situations in health care issues in pathology. In addition, among the key objectives of the programme are to equip students with critical thinking skills and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice as well as reach well-informed and rational decisions in health-care services and scientific judgements in nursing practice.

Since 2004-2005 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina have offered a post-graduate 4-semester programme under the title “Pain management” that leads to:

  1. A post-graduate degree on “Pain management”
  2. A doctoral degree


The main aims of the programme are:

  • The development of a rich knowledge of Physiopathological Mechanisms, of acute and chronic pain.
  • The presentation of the basic Syndromes of acute and chronic pain.
  • The analysis of the Basic Principles of Drug Therapy and Alternative Forms of Treatment
  • The medical assessment and therapeutic treatment of the patient who suffers from pain.
  • The medical assessment and therapeutic treatment of the Psychological aspect of pain.
  • The organization of services for pain management (Establishment of Medical Practices of Pain, Interdisciplinary collaboration of Healthcare Professionals, Networking).
  • The education and training of healthcare professionals who will offer both their medical and counseling services in the Medical Practices of pain and nursing services at home, and will further contribute to the pain management research.

The post-graduate programme “Pain Management” will be completed in 2017. At present, it is not foreseen to admit new students to this programme after this date.

Inter-institutional Interdepartmental Program of Postgraduate Studies (I.I.P.P.S.) offered by faculty of the Departments of Medicine and of Biological Applications and Technology of the School of Health Sciences and the Department of Chemistry of the School of Sciences of the University of Ioannina in conjunction with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH). Administrative support is provided by the Department of Medicine of the University of Ioannina.

The Program carries on the Interdepartmental P.P.S. in Biotechnology which is active since academic year 1998-99, as modified on 2003, 2005 and 2014, and re-founded on May 2018 as Inter-institutional Interdepartmental (I.I.) P.P.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biotechnology.

The Program awards a Master’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biotechnology. The duration of the Program is 3 academic semesters (90 ECTS).

The Program aims at preparing well-educated scientists for careers in biological/biomedical and biotechnological research, education, public services or the productive sector. In parallel, it aims at promoting knowledge and research development and contributes to the satisfaction of the educational, research, social, cultural and developmental needs of the country.

Successful completion of the postgraduate course requires an one-year Diploma Research Project to be carried out in one of the participating laboratories at the Departments of Medicine, Biological Applications and Technology or Chemistry of the University of Ioannina or the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Department of Biomedical Research (IMBB-BR), which is situated at Ioannina, and/or with collaborating research teams.

Call for expression of interest in participation to the program is initiated on June, selection of successful candidates is completed on September, and the postgraduate course starts on early October, each academic year. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina offers a post-graduate programme in “Basic Biomedical Sciences” with the participation of seven (7) Departments from the School of Medicine. The aim of the Programme is to provide scientists a thorough knowledge and excellent post-graduate training in biomedicine, offering, thus, advanced career prospects. For that, the collaborating Departments are Anatomy-Histology, Biology, Biological Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry, Hygiene and Epidemiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Physiology, from the School of Medicine.

The Programme leads to a Post-graduate degree in the discipline of Biomedical Sciences with 3 different specializations.

The specializations are the following:

There are no tuition fees, the studies are intensive and they last one full-time academic year.

Graduates from the following Departments are eligible for admission: Faculty of Medicine, Biology, Biological Applications and Technologies, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Environmental Studies, Agriculture, Food Science and Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering, Sociology, Mathematics, Economics, Informatics, Physics and Psychology. Graduates can be from national universities and from recognized universities abroad as well as from TEI Departments of related subject areas.

Admission of students is based upon the following criteria:

  1. Interview
  2. BA degree grade
  3. Other CV qualifications (i.e. research experience, work experience, relevance of undergraduate studies, marks in undergraduate courses relevant with the post-graduate courses, grading of the BA thesis, where such exists)
  4. English language proficiency
  5. Computer knowledge

The subject of the master thesis of this program covers a broad area of Basic Biomedicine Sciences.
