The Museum of the History of Medicine of the University of Ioannina was founded at the University of Ioannina in 1995.  Since its establishment, it has been tirelessly collecting artifacts related to the History of Medicine, exceeding presently the number of 20,000 objects, which are displayed at the 12 different areas of the museum.

The Museum’s collection exhibits significant medical artifacts from antiquity, including among others Dioskourian illustrations of pharmaceutical plants and herbs used at modern times, a small chapel with icons of 65 male doctors and 12 male doctors who obtained sainthood, coins, banknotes, medical comic strips and, most notably, a full collection of 450 Greek stamps on medical topics.

The Library and Information Centre of the University of Ioannina (LIC-UI) is housed in the new building in the centre of the university campus. The building has six floors and a surface (14.000 m2) that makes it the largest academic library in our country.

The LIC-UI possesses an extensive collection composed of 400,000 books and 1,000 current journal subscriptions, collections, newspapers, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc., all relevant to the courses taught in the University’s Departments. Its digital collections are of particular importance, consisting of around 14,000 electronic journals (with full text access), numerous databases, hundreds of e-books, old collections, books in Cyrillic and Arabic writing, etc. People with special visual impairments can have access to an extensive book collection in Braille writing system along with the necessary equipment for its use.

You can find more information in the LIC-UI website, where all services are presented, including access to the online catalogue (OPAC) of the University of Ioannina as well as to its rich information resources. At the beginning of each academic year the Central Library organizes training seminars addressed to all members of the academic community.
