Objectives: Basic knowledge in General, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, understanding the fundamental principles and laws in Chemistry, their relationship with biological systems and their application in Medical Science and mainly in:

  • the basic phenomena and reactions of intermediary metabolism of biomolecules
  • physiology and pathophysiology
  • pharmacology and
  • laboratory medicine.

Contents: Atomic structure, electromagnetic radiation, elements, atoms, periodic table, chemical bonds, ionic and covalent compounds, intermolecular forces, states of matter, chemical equation and calculations, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solutions, acids and bases, pH, oxidation-reduction reactions, concentration-dependent solution properties, trace elements.
Hydrocarbons: saturated, unsaturated, conformation, geometric isomers. Aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, thiols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines and amides.
Carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, peptide bond, protein structure. Structure of the nucleotide. Stereochemistry and stereoisomers

Teaching format and learning outcomes: Teaching is implemented through lectures and practical training in basic instrumental analysis techniques. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the structure and chemical behavior (reactions) of the basic groups of organic compounds and biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides) and the basic principles of the regulation of inorganic constituents (acid-base balance, trace elements).

Hours of training per student: 91

Semester: 1st
