Founded in 1977, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ioannina is one of the first regional medical schools in Greece and is a well-known research, education and health care institution. Its progress along the years, under the most adverse circumstances, is considered by many impressive and its achievements have brought it to the fore as a credible educational institution, offering high-standard health-care services and advancing new knowledge.

The Faculty consists of 7 sectors, 18 Laboratory & Departments, 26 Clinical Departments, 140 Members of Academic Staff, 1 Senior Teaching Staff, 11 Laboratory Teaching Staff, 19 Technical Laboratory Staff, 10 members of administrative staff, 640 PhD students and 1433 registered undergraduate students.
