Aim of this syllabus: Providing theoretical knowledge to the medical students about adolescence since it presents many differences, from childhood and adulthood.

Lecture topics: Adolescents' characteristics. Growth pattern (growth retardation, accelerating growth). Psychosocial and mental development. Hormonal development-puberty Tanner's stages. Puberty disorders (early puberty, delayed puberty). Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, obesity. High risk behavior: alcohol, drugs, violence, risky sexuality, smoking, driving with no experience, use of diet supplements, doping. Depression, suicidal ideation. Breast disorders (ectopic nipples, absence of nipples, benign-malignant tumors). Vaccinations during adolescence. Infectious diseases. Hypertension. Sexual infectious diseases. Skin problems (acne, psoriasis). Male genital abnormalities. Neoplastic and blood diseases. Transition from adolescence to adulthood. Internet (use, addiction, safety). Adolescence and sports. Chronic diseases.

Plan and outcomes of teaching: The lectures are given twice a week, while there is a teaching round in the wards of Pediatrics and the outpatient clinics during a twelve-week period. Students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge under the supervision of the tutor and all academic staff as to be able to approach the diagnosis of the majority of disorders in adolescence.
