Aim of the course: is the education of medical student in diagnosis and therapeutic approach of critically ill patients.

Contents of the course: criteria for ICU admission, recognize patient with acute deocmperastation, clinical examination, estimation of severity using scores (APACHE II, SOFA), acute respiratory failure (hypercapnic, hypoxemic), ARDS, cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, indications for endotracheal intubation, non invasive mechanical ventilation, mechanical ventilation, lung protective ventilation. Severe hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, head brain injuries general and specific treatment (indication of thrombolytic therapy and surgical treatment). Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with shock (cardiogenic, obstructive, hypovolemic, septic). International guidelines for management of sepsis. Management of patient with multiple trauma, and coagulation abnormalities due to trauma. Blood transfusions. Principles of artificial nutrition and algorithms of admission of parenteral nutrition. Brain death, criteria for diagnosis of brain death, organ donation. Ethic and legal dilemma in end of life patients.

Form and outcome of the course: the course consists of 12 2-hour lectures and a clinical course for a month in the ICU (at sixth year, for clinical education, review of literature, skills, self-assessment procedure). At the end of the course medical students should be familiar with the criteria for ICU admission, the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with acute respiratory failure, ARDS, strokes, head brain injuries, shock (septic hypovolemic, cardiogenic, obstructive), acute renal failure and poisoning. Moreover they should be familiar with monitoring (imaging, circulatoring, respiratory and CNS), initiation of central venous lines, airway management, mechanical ventilation CVVHDF, nutrition and brain death
