Course objectives: Anaesthesiology – Perioperative Medicine

Course contents: The progress in anaesthesiology. Types of anaesthesia. The administering of anaesthesia using medical simulation. Informing the patient and asking for their written consent for anaesthesia. General anaesthesia and requirements for the patient safety in Anaesthesiology. Venipuncture, maintaining airway patency, ventilation with AMBU, laryngeal masks, endotracheal intubation. Anaesthetics drugs. Postoperative complication (PONV, awareness, nerve injury, airway injury). Postoperative Pain and chronic Pain. Basic life support and automated external defibrillation, advanced life support. Monitoring using medical simulation. Regional anaesthesia. Administering sedation and its management (monitored anaesthesia care). Dealing with emergency cases-medical simulation in model. Multiple trauma patient, triage, fluid therapy and transfusions.

Course structure and teaching outcomes: The course is a combination of both lectures and simulated clinical cases in in the medical simulation center. Upon completion of the course, students will be aware of the fundamental points in the history of anaesthesia and its progress. The principal theories of anaesthesia and its components will be taught. The preoperative assessment and preparation of the patient is outlined. Knowledge of the pharmacology of anesthetic drugs, the basic principles of perioperative monitoring and the ability to perform the basic ventilation techniques and maintenance of the airway are also taught. The awareness of the basic principles of regional anaesthesia and the drugs used for these procedures. The handling of postoperative pain management. Knowledge of the basic principles of dealing with multi-trauma patients and other emergency situations which could put the patient at risk. Students are assessed based on their attendance of lectures, their participation in the simulation center and verbal examinations at the end of training.
