Objectives of the course: The course offers gaining of knowledge regarding the clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and management of Ear, Nose and Throat diseases. The emphasis is on learning - how to learn, so as to keep knowledge and skills updated throughout an individual's working life.

Contents of the course:

  • Clinical presentation, clinical examination, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients in Otorhinolaryngology and Neurootology
  • Applied anatomy, physiology and embryology of the ear. Symptoms, signs and investigation of ear diseases. Earache, discharge from the ear, all types of otitis. Complicated otitis media, acute mastoiditis. Referred otalgia. Cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma surgery. Auditory testing. Deafness, Conductive Hearing loss, Otosclerosis. Sensorineural hearing loss, congenital and acquired. Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Ototoxic Deafness, Presbycusis, Idiopathic. Facial nerve paralysis. Tinnitus. Vertigo, Meniere disease, Vestibular schwannoma, BPPV. Remedial Devices, Hearing aids. Cochlear Implants
  • Applied Anatomy, physiology and Embryology of the nose and Sinuses. Symptoms, Signs and Investigation of nasal and Sinus diseases. Nasal trauma and septal disorders. Epistaxis. Rhinitis. Vasomotor and allergic rhinitis. Nasal polyposis. Atrophic rhinitis. Sinusitis. Acute and chronic sinusitis. Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. Headache
  • Applied Anatomy, Physiology and Embryology of the Mouth. Diseases of the Mouth. Oral manifestation of Systemic Diseases. Disorders of the Jaw. Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity
  • Diseases of the salivary Glands. Sialadenitis, Sialolithiasis, Sjogren's Syndrome. Salivary Gland Tumors, Bening-Malignant. Superficial and total parotidectomy
  • Applied Anatomy, physiology and Embryology of the Throat. Congenital abnormalities, cysts, sinuses and fistulae. Symptoms, Signs and Investigations of Throat Diseases. Hoarseness, Dysphagia, Odynophagia, Lump in the Throat, Referred Otalgia, Lump in the Neck, Respiratory Symptoms. Sore Throat. Tonsillitis. Peritonsillar Abscess (quinsy). Tonsillectomy. Adenoiditis, Adenoidectomy. Neurological Disorders of Swallowing. Disorders of the Oesophageal and Pharyngeal Walls. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).Tumors of the Hypopharynx-Post-cricoid Region.
  • Hoarseness. Acute Laryngitis. Chronic Laryngitis. Chronic Specific Infections. Cysts, polyps and Nodules of the Larynx. Bening tumours and Papillomas. Carcinoma of the Larynx. Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy. Lump in the Neck.
  • Stridor. The Stridulous Child. Acute Epiglottitis. Laryngotracheobronchitis (Croup). Laryngomalacia. Snoring.
  • Tracheotomy and Tracheostomy.

Mode and outcomes of teaching: The course is being taught in combination with clinical and laboratory practice in small groups of students.

The students follow the operations of E.N.T. Department, (out patient's ward, clinic, emergencies department, operating theatre).and acquire theoretical and practical knowledge, by working next to the members of the teaching staff of the clinic. At the end of the course the students should be able to recognize the clinical and laboratory presentation of Ear, Nose and Throat diseases.

They should be also familiar with differential diagnosis and basic management of the Ear, Nose and Throat diseases.
