COURSE OBJECTIVE: Development of the appropriate language skills (vocabulary & grammatical-syntactic features) for the comprehension of ENGLISH MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY as well as for the comprehension and oral production of professional medical English.

COURSE CONTENT: Topics Cardiology – Urology – Gynaecology, Obstetrics & Pregnancy – Andrology – Paediatrics – Dermatology – Otorhinolaryngology - Ophthalmology – General Medicine – Neurology, Psychiatry & Behaviour Disorders – Diagnosis, Therapy & Intensive care medicine Language features: Articles – Adjectives – Compounds – Common Abbreviations – Paraphrase – Informal use of language – Phrasal verbs – Elliptical/Emphatic constructions. Professional Medical English (Patient History, Patient Examination, Breaking (bad) news to the patients, Hospital environment, Case study presentation).

COURSE METHODOLOGY AND OUTCOMES: The material used for teaching include print material, a dictionary (distributed via Eudoxus) and digital, multimedia material, uploaded in the online platform E-course of the Univ. of Ioannina. Group projects are assigned and particular emphasis is placed upon use of New Technologies (power-point presentations, creation of infographics, use of corpora, etc.) for the practice of language skills. By the end of this course, students are expected to have acquainted with a wide range of English Medical Terminology and the language requirements of professional medical English.
