Course Objectives: The course is aimed at acquiring the essential knowledge regarding epidemiology, aetiology, diagnosis, assessment and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol and other psychoactive substances and abuse.

Description of the course: The biological basis of addiction, the comprehension of addiction in the context of bio-psycho-social model, non-chemical addictions (gambling -internet addiction), the epidemiology of Alcohol or Substances Use Disorders (A-SUD) and treatment seeking for addictions in Greece and worldwide, the procedures for diagnosis/screening of A-SUD, the comorbidity between mental disorders and A-SUD (Dual Diagnosis), the clinical presentation/phenomenology of patients suffering from A-SUD, medical and psychosocial complications of using alcohol or drugs, Pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment for A-SUD, recognition and treatment of Dual Diagnosis patients, relapse prevention, preventive strategies for A-SUD, legislation and public health policies aiming at drug use prevention

Delivery and outcomes: The course will be delivered via lectures. During the course clinical cases will be presented aiming at the better comprehension of the challenges presenting during the assessment and treatment of patient suffering from A-SUD.
