Aim of this syllabus: Providing theoretical and practical knowledge about pediatric diseases from the neonatal period to adolescence.

Lecture topics: Neonatology: respiratory distress syndrome, perinatal asphyxia, deviant growth development, congenital infections, neonatal jaundice, neonatal infections, surgical problems. Chromosomal abnormalities. Immunodeficiencies. Infections in children: rash and non-rash infectious diseases, bacterial infections, fever of unknown origin. Respiratory tract system: upper and lower respiratory tract infections, bronchiolitis, asthma, food allergy, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis. Cardiovascular system: congenital heart diseases, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, pericarditis. Gastrointestinal system: acute and chronic abdominal pain, malabsorption, hepatitis. Kidney/Urinary tract system: prenatal hydronephrosis, congenital anomalies of urinary tract, urinary tract infection, vesicoureteral reflux, nephrotic syndrome, haematuria, glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic renal disease, hypertension, disturbances of fluids and electrolytes. Hematopoietic system: iron deficiency anemia, hemoglobinopathies, purpura, bleeding disorders, leucocyte disorders. Malignant disorders: Osteosarcoma, sarcoma Ewing, rhabdomyosarcoma, lymphomas, leukemias. Endocrine system: diabetes mellitus, growth abnormalities, early puberty, thyroid function disorders. Nervous system: febrile seizures, afebrile seizures, epilepsy, status epilepticus, hypotonic infant, neuromuscular disorders, cerebral pulsy, mental retardation, autism, abnormalities of speech and social interaction development, neurocutaneous syndromes, headaches (tension, migraine), brain stroke events. Rheumatic diseases: juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus. Bone and joint disorders. Traumas, poisoning incidents, burns.

Plan and outcomes of teaching: The lectures are given three times a week, while there is daily teaching round in the wards of Pediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the outpatient clinics during a 12-week period. During the same period the students are on calls (7 hours/day) for eight days. Students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge under the supervision of all academic staff as to be able to approach the diagnosis of the majority of pediatric disorders.
