Course objectives: Pain management

Course Contenets: Definition and clinical pain syndromes, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of pain. General principles of pain assessment and management. Non pharmacological and invasive interventions in pain management. Management of acute and chronic pain of benign and malignant origin. Complications of pain therapy. Palliative care

Course structure and teaching outcomes: The course is a combination of lectures, clinical scenarios in the medical simulation center and clinical practice in small groups in the pain clinic, postoperative recovery unit and in the ward. Students will be able to provide an overview in assessment, differential diagnosis and treatment of pain with opioids and non-opioid drugs and to actively involve during invasive interventions for the pain management. The assessment will be based on their attendance of lectures, their active participation in the simulation center and their performance on written exams (MCQ). Before and upon completion of the course, self-assessment is performed using a specific questionnaire.
