Theme: Introduction to Evolutionary Biology, with emphasis on the genetic and genomic basis of the theory of evolution and its applications on biomedical sciences

Contents: Evolution theory (principles, genetic and natural selection processes, evidence of evolutionary processes), Origin of life (origin of the first cells, origin of eukaryotic cells, evolution of biodiversity), Genome programs (Genome landscapes, Genes and non-gene sequences, Transposable elements, Epigenetics, Genetic polymorphisms, Functional genomics), Molecular rationale of Evolution (Experimental evolution, Molecular evolution, Phylogenies, Systems evolution), Evolutionary aspects of processes with biomedical interest (development, diseases).

Teaching format and Learning outcomes: Teaching courses to small groups of students given by several instructors (academic personnel from different disciplines and research specialties). Students are expected to understand the principles and genetic basis of the theory of evolution and the evolutionary aspects of biological processes associated with human physiology and pathogenesis.

Hours of training per student: 26

Semester: 4th

ECTS: 2
