Aim of this syllabus: Training in clinical and laboratory evaluation (assessment) of the clinically healthy child, from the neonatal period to the adolescence.

Lecture topics: Taking the history in children. Clinical assessment of the newborn infant. Thermoregulation and lung maturation in newborns. Report of the normal limits of hematological and biochemical parameters in premature and full-term newborns. Breastfeeding. Colic attacks of the first 3-month postnatal period. Vaccination for children and adolescents. Assessment of growth patterns (Body weight, Body length, Head circumference), using growth charts and detecting any deviation from normal. Assessment of the skull fontanelles and sutures. Definition of macrocephaly, microcephaly, craniosynostosis. Primitive reflexes in early infancy. Neurological examination in infancy and childhood. Psychomotor development from infancy to the age of 6 years. Description of the Denver Developmental Screening Test II and its clinical importance. Measurement of peak flow rate-spirometry, blood gas assessment. Definition of immunogenicity, allergenicity and immune tolerance. Description of fetal and neonatal circulation, physiological adaptation of circulation from neonatal age to adolescence. Functional murmurs, normal electrocardiogram. The preparticipation athletic evaluation in children and adolescents. Assessment of glomerular filtration rate and renal tubular function in children. Assesment of creatinine clearance. Urinary concentrating and acidification capacity. Urine sample analysis. Intravenous solutions in children (reqruiments in fluids and electrolytes). Measurement/assessment of blood pressure in children. Specific characteristics of haemopoiesis, haemostasis and iron metabolism during childhood. Changes of haemoglobin during fetal life, neonatal period and infancy. Percentages of haemoglobin variants in normal child. Assessment of complete blood count. Physiologic anaemia of infancy.Vitamin D metabolism, main dietary sources and extra-skeletal actions of vitamin D.

Plan and outcomes of teaching: The lectures are given daily in the morning followed by daily teaching round in the wards of Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for a four week-period. Students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge under the supervision of all academic staff as to be able to recognize a normal child, any deviation from normal, and to be on the way for their clinical training in Pediatrics during the 6th year in Medical School.
