Subject: Learning objectives: the clinical presentation, the differential diagnosis and the management of various disease conditions in Internal Medicine and its Subspecialties (Nephrology, Metabolic Diseases, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Hematology, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Intensive Care).

Contents:

  • Peptic ulcer, Esophagitis, Bile duct diseases, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Liver cirrhosis and its complications, Hepatitis – Autoimmune liver diseases, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Pancreatitis
  • Classification of rheumatic diseases, Rheumatoid arthritis – Spondyloarthropathies, Adult Still's disease, Sjogren's syndrome, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Antiphospholipid syndrome, Scleroderma, Vasculitides, Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Pseudogout, Mixed connective tissue disease, Dermatomyositis
  • Acute and chronic renal disease, Hypertension and cardiovascular risk, Glomerulopathies, Interstitial nephropathy
  • Electrolyte disorders: disturbances of Να+ and Κ+ / acid-base balance disorders
  • Cerebrovascular disease

Relevant lectures of a two-hour duration each are held twice a week.

Form and teaching outcomes: The lesson is taught in conjunction with the teaching of physical examination skills and clinical practice in the Departments of the Internal Medicine Division. Physical Examination Skills are taught in the wards involving student groups under the guidance and supervision of Teaching Members and Clinical Stuff of the Internal Medicine Division.

The objective of the bedside teaching of physical examination skills is for students to be able to perform independently a complete physical examination and familiarize with symptoms and physical signs.

Clinical practice for students in groups takes place in several clinics of the Internal Medicine Division:

  • Hematology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Endocrinology
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology and Rheumatology departments

During the practice students are taught of the clinical manifestations and the differential diagnosis of common disease conditions in Internal Medicine. The intention is to incorporate students into the clinics, to familiarize with clinical skills and to improve understanding of various significant health disorders.
