The Department of Haematology, University Hospital of Ioannina was established in 1998 (ΦΕΚ 193 19/8/1998) and started operating in 2004. The Department of Haematology, provides tertiary clinical services for blood diseases and blood cancers in Northwestern Greece.

The Department plays also an important role in clinical medical education and training of medical students of the Ioannina Medical School, University of Ioannina. The Haematology Department is also a recognized center enabled to provide full 4–year training for the Specialty of Haematology.

We offer medical services for patients with blood cancers, such as acute and chronic leukaemias, multiple myeloma, lymphomas and myeloproliferative neoplasms and other haematological disorders such as anaemias and clotting disorders. The department provides a 24-hour/7 days a week inpatient services for urgent assessment of acutely sick patients and is covered by two Medical School Faculty Members, 4 Specialist Haematologists and 7 trainees in Haematology. It is also supported by a 24-member nursing staff.

The Department is a member of the European LeukemiaNet, EORTC and the BBMRI through its connection to the Cancer Biobank of the University of Ioannina.
