Objectives of the course: Urology is the surgical specialty that focuses on disorders of the urinary tract of men and women and on pathophysiologies of the male reproductive system. The education of students in Urology offers theoretical knowledge and clinical practice. More specifically Urology deals with diseases of the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra) in men and women, as well as with pathophysiologies of the genital tract of the male (testes, epididymes, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory ducts, prostate gland, and the penis).

Contents of the course: The anatomical characteristics of the genitourinary system. Physiology and histology of the genitourinary system. Vascularization of kidney. Pathophysiologies of urinary tract. Symptomatology in urological diseases.Clinical examination of the urologic patient. General laboratory testing of urological diseases. Renal function test.Radiological control urinary tract. Tests with radioisotopes. Ultrasonography. Computational tomography. Experimental models of urological diseases in animals. Congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary system. Inflammation of the urinary tract. Inflammation of the genital tract. Diseases transmitted by sexual contact. Tuberculosis of the genitourinary system. Biopsy of kidney. Kidney and different situations. Renal failure. Nephrogenic hypertension. Cystic diseases of the kidney. Kidney transplantation. Drainage of urine, intraospective endourologic manipulations and interventions. Calculi in the urinary tract. Extracorporeal lithotripsy. Percutaneous lithotripsy. Lithotripsy and Laser. Usage of Laser in Urology. Newest bloodless surgical techniques in urology. Parasites in the urinary system. Tumors of the prostate gland. Tumors of the renal parenchyma. Tumors of the ureter. Tumors of the genital system. Diseases and Tumors of the retroperitoneal space. Retroperitoneal fibrosis. Injuries of the urinary tract. Dysfunction of the lower urinary tract etiology of neural (neurogenic bladder). Urinary incontinence (diagnosis, pharmaceutical - surgical treatment). Urodynamic evaluation of the lower urinary tract. Investigation, diagnosis and treatment of male and female sexual dysfunction. Diseases of the testis. Alterations in quantitative and qualitative sperm parameters. Diseases of the penis. Erectile dysfunction. Investigation of the male infertility.

Mode and outcomes of teaching: Theoretical knowledge and clinical practice are offered to the students of 4th and 5th year. The lectures are offered by academic staff/physicians. Often academic staff from other medical schools of Greece or abroad is invited to contribute to the education of the students. At the end of the training the students will be able to diagnose and treat the most common urologic diseases.
